Jan 2009: An End to Overfishing by 2011
1. Past Actions
In the summer of 2008, our Ocean Action Team and Aquarium visitors sent over 6,100 letters and postcards to the National Marine Fisheries Service asking them to support an end to overfishing in U.S. fisheries.
On January 16, 2009, the National Marine Fisheries Service published its "annual catch limit rule". This rule creates a framework for fishery managers to establish annual catch limits, based on the best available science, in order to end overfishing in U.S. waters by 2011.
This represents an important step forward in fisheries management. The Fisheries Service received many thousands of comments from ocean wildlife advocates like you and we are certain that changes made to the proposal were as a result of hearing from members of the public.
